捨身ヶ地嶽禅定

弘法大師は、この地で、「私はこれから仏門の世界に身を起き、人々を救済したい。この願いが叶うならば、釈迦如来よ、私の目の前に現れ、もしこの願いが叶わないなら、この生命を捨て、この身を諸仏に捧げる」と、言い、断崖絶壁に身を投じた。

すると、釈迦如来と天女が現れ、弘法大師を抱きとめた。

Kobodaishi said “I will enter a Buddhist monastery, and would like to salvage people. Gautama Buddha, if you don’t appear and my dream doesn’t come true, I will just give up my life and dedicate my soul to Buddha.” On this spot, and plunged into the bluff.
And then, Gautama Buddha and heavenly maidens appeared, and caught him on her arms.
