修験道の祖・役行者（えんのぎょうじゃ）が開山した寺で、かつては修験道の根本道場として栄えた。紀州熊野権現の分霊を移し、「熊野山八坂寺」と呼ばれた。

本尊は秘仏で御開帳は50年に一度。

En No Gyoza built this temple. It used to be a famous shugendo (mountain-dwelling practice). Main deity is not open to public but it can be seen every 50 years.

閻魔堂

美しい浄土「極楽の途」、餓鬼道、畜生道、修羅道の「地獄の途」が描かれたトンネル。

Enmado
The tunnel is drawn about Beautiful pure land “way to paradise”, preta way, animal way, asura way (lowest ranks of the deities) and way to Hell.
